The basic principles of Cristoforo da Messisbugo will serve us well…good taste and knowledge always go hand in hand. Enoteca al Brindisi, the oldest in the world (1435), for a great aperitif and local wines, Birreria Giori, Giori, also good for a quick with an exceptional view, the Castello Estense, Cusina e Butega, Butega, for meal but also for purchasing excellent sliced meats and cheeses, informal setting, Ca’d’Frara, modern, slightly more elegant trattoria, Pizzeria Orsucci, long-standing pizzeria i Via Saraceno. Start with the chickpeas and continue with the “with” and “without” pan pizzas…up to you to discover the story behind their names, Leon d’Oro for a great afternoon treat. Here you can purchase the famous Pampapato Estense and the Gelateria Cremeria Primo Frutto. we highly recommend the Bunet flavour… even if it’s not a dessert from Ferrara. What must be tried? Fortana wine and other wines from the Eliceo forest, Pasticcio di Maccheroni (which must be enclosed in the traditional sweet pastry), Pinzino with sliced meats (in Ferrara, salami is flavoured with garlic!), Pumpkin Cappellacci (not tortelli!!). I would like to experience the city of Ferrara like a local:
A cycle ride on a “biga”, the typical Ferrara bicycle, on the city walls, for those who love jogging…to work off all of our wine and food recommendations. If you are still hungry, we also recommend you add some “La Coppia”, the famous bread from Ferrara, to your basket. A satisfying pause for reflection at the Monastery of Sant’Antonio in Polesine, the Biblioteca Ariostea, Casa Romei, Casa dell’Ariosto, Palazzo Diamanti e and the Pinacoteca Nazionale (works by Cosmè Tura, Dosso Dossi and Bastianino) and finally to Meis, the National Museum of Italian Judaism and Shoah. Saturday shopping along the Listone (runs along the longest side of the Duomo with recently inaugurated new concept lighting) Market in the square on Mondays and Fridays. Lo shopping è anche in via Bersaglieri, Mazzini e Garibaldi. Shopping also awaits in Via Bersaglieri, Mazzini and Garibaldi. In Ferrara, the locals do their shopping at “Il Castello” shopping Centre. A true local would take “l’Ape”(an aperitif) in Piazza Ariostea. However, don’t triple park for it like we do! Bar 4S di in front of the Teatro Comunale is a popular place to stop. You will find a good quality aperitif at the Enoteca della Scimmia, a place where product knowledge is paramount, located two minutes away from the Unesco World Heritage city walls. Ferrara also has its own beer called Birra Frara. Try it! Locals enjoy unforgettable “Panozzi” (sandwiches) atHustariaza and buy bread from the Orsatti bakery. Have lunch at Hostaria Savonarola (very good with children) or out of the city centre at the uforgettable Cà Vecia run by the ever-present Arnaldo. Choose to enjoy a special, elegant evening at the Agriturismo Podere Misericordia farm restaurant, but make sure you are not in a hurry. The express cuisine is cooked as you wait. Some Ferrara dishes par excellence are Salama da Sugo and Pumpkin Cappellaccio, tossed in melted butter and sage or dressed with a meat sauce. Desserts include the famous Pampapato, named after the Pope because he was the only one who could afford it and the wonderful Tenerina Ferrarese…if it seems too light by itself, console yourself with the addition of some mascarpone cream.

I like Ferrara so much I would like to spend two or more days in the city:
First, start with the recommendations given in point 1 above for seeing Ferrara in one day.
Continue with a trip to Comacchio, celebrated in the past by Ludovico Ariosto in Orlando Furioso. Visit the Roman Ship and the Trepponti (draw inspiration from the term “impaluda”, meaning marshland,which says a lot about Comacchio). Proceed with the Cathedral (very large for what is in effect a small city), the restored fish market, Manifattura Marinati (the videos from Istituto Luce are worth seeing) and Loggiato dei Cappuccini, which will inspire photographers. There are some charming routes heading out from Comacchio towards the salt pans and the ancient Casoni di Pesca (ask about the poaching boats and go fishing for clams!).
Birdwatching and photography enthusiasts will be able to see pink flamingos and the famous black-winged stilt. When you have seen Comacchio, remember that Ferrara is quite a large province. Its jewels are called Faro di Goro, but above all the Delizie, which put simply are the summer residences of the Este family. They are home to the famous broli (orchards) and Harry Potter type potionology courses designed for smaller children are held at the Verginese. Another sight worth seeing (we have already mentioned Schifanoia) is the Rocca Possente di Stellata di Bondeno. On Sundays, you can visit a wonderful antiques market and enjoy homemade Pinzino made by the “zdòre” (the local women). After that, proceed to Belriguardo and the beautiful Castello della Mesola.

What else can I do? Go wild and check out the website: www.navideldelta.it Visit Cantine Mariotti, and try their local “vini delle sabbie” wines (Italian for sand wines) Where to go for some good food? To Comacchio, home of the eel, excellent served in a traditional risotto. Do not miss the freshest fish of all, served in Ristorante Al Cantinon under the Trepponti. At certain times of the year, you can also enjoy some Jazz concerts. Remember, marinated eel can also be purchased in Comacchio ready to eat, so you can take it home. If you have a few days available, the “Pearls of Ferrara” await you!
In addition to the above-mentioned clams, salami, wines from the Eliceo Forest, Pampapato, Coppia Ferrarese PGI, Eel, Pumpkin Cappellaccio and Coppia Ferrarese known as Ciupèta, there is Delta rice, Voghera garlic, Water Melons, Melons, Pears, the “Zia Ferrarese” salami, Nectarine Peaches, Asparagus and Carrots.
